Letter from Dekalb
County Jail
Jesus Christ is on his knees praying to his and our Father in this hour, that he lift your burden. Believers and nonbelievers all know that on February 26th, a wonderful and loving son Trayvon was stolen from your family. Thank God you both had a spirit in your souls to roll the rock from his tomb and let his spirit live through your words. The bones of African-American people are spread all over America and are often in fragments. Your young beautiful son’s spirit has awakened the “dry bones in the valley.” I thank God for being real in our mist. All faithful saints’ prayers do live. I write you this letter from the Dekalb County Jail, where I’ve been held since March 26th, after I was on live broadcast on CNN, to announce that the New Black Panther Party, under the leadership of our great young and brilliant Attorney Malik Zulu Shabazz, and I as the national chief of staff. We responsibly identified our constitutional rights to offer a $10,000.00 reward for anyone that could keep up with this Zimmerman whom we fear would try to leave the country. We also, under the United States Constitution, gave the city of Sanford, Florida and the United States Attorney General—our brother—Eric Holder that we were following protocol of issuing a citizen’s arrest and that we could prove probable cause. We would make it our mission to bring in the murderer George Michael Zimmerman, who is still with his father and mother Robert and Gladys Zimmerman. Communities all over America felt the same. Thank God for your insistent engagement for your son, which caused Special Prosecutor Angela Corey to make the right move, even though it took from February 26 to April 12. Now the real fight starts. My sister and brother, we know we’ve been here before, but this time I pray that God will be the prosecutor, and then I know your family will receive justice that is due. And after that good night of sleep, you--as did little Emmit Till’s mother, our late sister Mrs. Mosely—will be right back on your marathon mission to canvass this nation, telling the story of a great pain that will one day soon promise to make us a better people. Ironically the tragedy has caused some self hate and Black on Black crime to cease. Mr. and Mrs. Martin, our national administration team took a lot of heat for our position on the issue and expression thereof, but it was very necessary given the circumstances, and we do not apologize for it. It made the system turn to you and our brother Reverend Al Sharpton and others. I was supposed to be down there, but as I stated earlier, was arrested and withheld very soon after my announcement of the citizen’s arrest reward. However, I hope my 20-year friend brother Roland Martin sent word of our love. We are the Malcolm X’s and Marcus Garvey’s of our time, but history shows us that they made a way for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and W.E.B. DuBois. This country always needs both. We love you, and if there is anything we can do, call on us at 202-369-9986.
